Senior Advisor to the Federal Secretary of Education visits the Montessori Project

In order to help improve the public education system in Puerto Rico, the PR Education Sustainability Team (PRES) was formed from the Office of the Secretary of Education in Washington. Soto, who hopes to visit the island once a month, leads the effort.

Chris was able to observe environments of Toddlers, Early Childhood, Elementary I and Secondary. He participated in community meetings in both places. In Lajas he had the opportunity to talk with the students and their families, with community and university leaders who collaborate with the Marine Sciences project that is being born in the Parguera school.

In an interview with El Nuevo Día he expressed about his visit, “What is in the end the most important of this visit, the intention of this visit is to hear from students, parents, teachers, non-profit organizations. We talk a lot with the Department of Education so it was important to hear from other stakeholders on the island. ''

“It is encouraging to see an official from the Federal Department of Education visit schools like Chris Soto did this past October. He saw first-hand what we go thru on the island, its greatest need and the possibilities that are emerging. It is good to know that they have their eyes and their hearts in our people,” shared Ana Maria Garcia, Executive Director of the Nueva Escuela Institute.
